Leipheimer und Horner dominieren Königsetappe in Kalifornien

Hand in Hand überquerten die beiden US-Amerikaner den Zielstrich der 121,9 Kilometer langen und zugleich vorletzen Etappe von Claremont zur Bergankunft auf den Mount Baldy. Mit 43 Sekunden Rückstand auf das Spitzenduo erreichte der Niederländer Laurens Ten Dam (Rabobank) das Tagesziel der Königsetappe. Bester Deutscher wurde Ten Dams Rabobank-Teamkollege Paul Martens (Rostock/3:19 Min. zurück) als 19.

Der Münsteraner Linus Gerdemann (Leopard Trek) erreichte 3:56 Minuten nach dem Duo Horner/Leipheimer als 24. das Tagesziel und fiel in der Gesamtwertung vom achten auf den elften Platz zurück. Der 39 Jahre alte Horner steht vor der Schlussetappe am Sonntag mit 38 Sekunden Vorsprung auf Leipheimer vor dem Gesamtsieg der Rundfahrt, die dieser von 2007 bis 2009 dreimal in Folge gewinnen konnte. Der drittplazierte Thomas Danielson (USA/Garmin-Cervélo) weist bereits einen Rückstand von 2:45 Minuten auf Horner auf.

Die Rundfahrt endet mit dem 129,1 Kilometer langen Abschnitt von Santa Clarita nach Thousand Oaks.
