Der 39-jährige RadioShack-Profi konnte sich nach 131,6 Kilometern von Livermore zur Bergankunft nach San Jose als Solist durchsetzen und die Führung in der Gesamtwertung übernehmen. Der Luxemburger Andy Schleck (Leopard Trek) führte 1:15 Minuten nach Horners Zieldurchfahrt die erste Verfolgergruppe vor dem Australier Sutherland (UnitedHealthcare) ins Ziel. Platz vier belegte Horners Teamkollege und Landsmann Levi Leipheimer. Bester Deutscher wurde der für die luxemburgische Leopard-Trek-Mannschaft fahrende Münsteraner Linus Gerdemann als Zehnter.

In der Gesamtwertung führt Routiner Horner nun mit 1:15 Minuten vor dem dreimaligen Gesamtsieger Leipheimer. Auf den Plätzen drei und vier liegen die beiden US-amerikanischen Garmin-Cervélo-Fahrer Thomas Danielson (1:22 zurück) und Christian Vande Velde (+1:29). Der Wahlschweizer Gerdemann liegt mit 1:50 Minuten Rückstand auf Rang acht.
