Brite Swift gewinnt verspäteten Auftakt in Kalifornien

Der 23-jährige Sky-Profi konnte den auf 122,8 Kilometer verkürzten zweiten Tagesabschnitt von Nevada City nach Sacramento vor dem Slowaken Peter Sagan (Liquigas) und dem Australier Matthew Goss (HTC-Highroad) im Massensprint für sich entscheiden. Der Markleeberger Robert Förster vom US-Team Unitedhealthcare sprintete als bester Deutscher auf Platz 13. Der Amberger Andreas Schillinger wurde als 17. bester Fahrer der deutschen NetApp-Mannschaft.

Lange Zeit bestimmt wurde die Etappe von Schillingers NetApp Teamkollegen Timon Seubert, der sich zusammen mit Laszlo Bodrogi (Team Type 1), James Driscoll (Jamis-Sutter) und Ben Jacques-Maynes (Bissell Cycling) vom Feld absetzen konnte. Zeitweise fünf Minuten Vorsprung konnten der Hamburger Seubert und seine Fluchtgefährten zwischen sich und das Feld bringen, um dann 14 Kilometer doch noch eingeholt zu werden.

In der Gesamtwertung führt Swift dank Zeitgutschriften mit vier Sekunden vor dem Slowaken Sagan und sechs vor Mailand-San-Remo-Sieger Goss. Nach zwei Etappenerfolgen bei der Tour Down Under und jeweils einem Tageserfolg bei der Kastilien-Rundfahrt sowie der Tour de Romandie war es bereits der fünfte Saisonsieg für den Swift.

Nachdem die erste Etappe am Sonntag wegen Schneefalls und Temperaturen um den Gefrierpunkt abgesagt werden musste, war auch das zweite Teilstück auf 122,8 Kilometer verkürzt worden. Die morgige dritte Etappe führt über 196,2 flache Kilometer von Auburn nach Modesto.
